I did learn a fair amount from reading this, although with a few caveats.

Abysmal ignorance and contemptible agenda
Paul Cartledge is a lucky fellow.

Not good - but the blame lies with the editor
The only qualification that Paul Cartledge had for writing this book is that he knows the sources.

Lots of good stuff, but not enough action.
The inside front cover biography in is book introduces Paul Cartledge as Professor of Greek History at Cambridge, author of several books, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and the President of Greece awarded him the Order of Honour.

An amazing true story
Great book, if you're interested in this epic battle that took place and would like to learn more about the Spartan culture that produced such amazing soldiers you should read this book.

Really Not Much on the Battle
It is very unfortunate that such an expert as Paul Cartledge would write a book which displays such a lack of focus.

Theromopylae Review

Wonderful in the beginning, in the middle, and in the end.
The former reviewers imagine that you can write a book on a three-battle day in some more than 340 pages .

look elsewhere
I agree with many reviewers who stated that this book is mostly a long and painful description leading up to the battle and seeingly a fly by with just a few words about the actual battle.
